International Ballroom Dance

There are several different classifications of ballroom dance including WDC (World Dance Council)-defined competition dances, American Style, historical, and nightclub.  SYDC practices WDC-defined competition dances including International Standard, International Latin, and formation.

International Latin

Rumba

The rumba is the slowest but most romantic Latin dance you can do on the dance floor.  Time to get to know your partner...!

Chachacha

The aptly named chachacha embodies the lively Latin soul with snappy hip movements.  It's hard to dance the chacha without a huge smile on your face!

Samba

Originally a Brazilian festival dance, the samba should conjure images of bouncing bright colors.  Even now, though adapted for competition, it has not lost its bounce.

Jive

The jive will have you kicking and flicking all over the dance floor. This style of dance was derived from a long history of African-American swing dancers.

Paso Doble

Paso doble - the stiffest of the Latin dances - hails from Spain, emulating the tradition of bull-fighting.

International Standard

Waltz

The waltz may be the most recognizable example of ballroom dance. It's best known for its graceful gliding across the floor and 3/4 time (1-2-3 count).

Viennese Waltz

Like the waltz, the Viennese waltz is danced in 3/4 time, but much more quickly and while almost constantly spinning around the floor.  Be careful not to get dizzy from all that spinning!

Tango

Dancing the tango requires both passion and power.  It is no wonder there are a myriad of tango styles born from a myriad of different countries.

Slow Foxtrot

The slow foxtrot is a dance for when you want to take it nice and easy.  It is romantic, yet casual - all around, c'est magnifique!

Quickstep

In stark contrast to the slow foxtrot, the quickstep is the most upbeat and energetic of the standard dances.  Its fun steps include bouncing around like a "pepperpot" and wagging like a "fishtail"!
